Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.. Matthew 5:14
What matters is obeying our own call. A city on a hill can be seen for miles. We are not to be hiding our light or for that matter, hiding our voice. If we are living for Christ, our lives as an example is showing others what Christ is like. Like a beacon, when we submit to His will and allow His light to shine in our lives, others can find their way.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
When we hear His voice of correction or discipline, we must be willing to follow His lead. We must not pick and choose which direction to take, we must be obedient in all His direction.
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. John 21:22
Peter had asked Jesus a question, What about him Lord? He was asking about how John would die. Jesus replied that Peter should not concern himself with that. We often tend to compare our lives to others whether to rationalize our own level of devotion to Christ or to question God’s justice. Jesus response to Peter would be the same to us. What is that to you? “Follow Me”
Jesus gave an answer that was revealing to Peter and applies to us as well. All those who commit their life to Christ have the privilege of glorifying the Lord. God uses us in different ways, according to our personality, talents and the purpose that God has for our lives. Every person is unique, so it is a mistake to compare ourselves with others.
For instance, Peter was commissioned to be a faithful leader. A man who would walk in faith and lead by faith. This is why he was so tested in his faith, before he was released to become the faithful leader that he was to become. Remember, three times he denied Jesus. This was a test of his faith. People make the mistake to think that Peter founded the ‘church’ .
The body of believers in Christ, are the church. It was Peter’s faith that Jesus had referred to when Jesus told Peter that on this rock, that Jesus would build His church. Let’s look at that passage.
Matthew 16: 13-19
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Jesus asked the crowd a question. “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God”. No one had told him that Jesus was the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus said, that no flesh or blood had revealed this to Peter. Jesus had not yet become the Christ, the anointed one who hung on the cross. Then Jesus went on to give Simon Peter a new name and said these words. ” Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”
It was Peter’s faith that had spoken and given the answer that had been revealed to him by God in heaven. If Peter did not have faith that what was revealed to him was true, he never would have spoken the answer into existence. But he did so, by faith, and the church of Christ, is all built on the foundation (rock) of faith. Either Jesus is our rock or it is Peter as the rock? We can not have it both ways. It was Peter’s faith, that led Jesus to give him the name of Peter because of Peter’s faith . If you go all the way back to the Greek meaning of Petros, (pronounced pet’-ros) apparently a primary word; a (piece of) rock ; as a name, Petrus, an apostle:–Peter, rock. we find lithos, (pronounced lee’-thos) apparently a primary word; a stone (literally or figuratively):–(mill-, stumbling-)stone. If we research this name further in the Greek, we find: Kephas, ( pronounced kay-fas’ ) which is of Chaldee origin; the Rock; Cephas (i.e. Kepha), a surname of Peter:–Cephas. This word translated from the Hebrew is keph, ( pronounced kafe) which means: hollow rock:–rock.
We are all given a measure of faith, like Peter and we are filled with more faith as we follow Jesus and live by faith. We are no more like a hollow rock, but a rock filled with faith. A strong foundation. The meaning in Hebrew even goes back to a primitive root word of kaphaph, ( pronounced kaw-faf’) : to curve:–bow down (self).
So Peter was commissioned because of His faith, like all of us who first believe that Jesus Christ is who He says that He is. We believe by faith. Then we call upon His name and are saved. Hell can not stop our faith. Remember those words that Jesus said? “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. It wasn’t a stone, or even Peter that would prevail against hell. It is our faith that will prevail against all the powers of hell. It is our faith that is built upon the strong foundation of the gospel of the kingdom.
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
There is salvation in no one else, no matter who they claim to be or the power they claim to have. There is no other name in all of heaven and in all of the earth for people to call on to save them. They must call on Jesus. This is not something that any church has made a decision about. This is the specific teaching of Jesus, himself. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me. John 14:6
No if’s and’s or but’s and no matter how you slice it or dice it, Jesus is the ONLY WAY! There has been no other religious teacher in history that has died and rose again to ever lasting life and provides us with assurance, by example that we too can live in the everlasting, once we die and rise again, on the day of resurrection of Jesus Christ, when all the dead in Christ shall rise at the sound of the trumpet. All other gods have been man made but no other god has been made man except the one true God and His name is Yah’wey. At the sound of the trumpet, the ones who are still alive in Christ then, will see those who have gone before us, rise up from the graves.
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
We haven’t heard that trumpet yet, so people, if you are not ready, get ready. The day of the Lord is at hand.
We are all supposed to be an instrument to God and each of us have our own instilled unique way of doing just that. Yet, every religion is susceptible to the certainty that it’s own group in the only one whose side, God is on.
This belief demands viewing all others as enemies to be destroyed because of this spiritual arrogance. This belief is opposite of what the Bible teaches. It is God’s desire that all come to repentance and that none perish, but by our own choices, we can deny His existence and then because of our disbelief, we are condemned for not believing.
John 3:17-18 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
It is clear, cut and dried.
Spiritual arrogance is an enemy of faith and an enemy of God. We can not ever become so puffed up in our belief that anyone and everyone is not worthy to be saved.
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
What this scripture is saying is “blessed are those who recognize their need to be filled with the Spirit of Christ.
“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Matthew 7:1
For just as you judge and criticize and condemn others, you will be judged and criticized and condemned, and in accordance with the measure you [use to] deal out to others, it will be dealt out again to you.
God calls whom He will.
John 5:21 “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will.”
Jesus will make the decision as to whom He will call because only Jesus knows the heart of a man and judges. God has not condemned us but He has given all judgment to Jesus.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Jeremiah 17: 9-10
It is clear by this passage in scripture, why we sin. It is a matter of the heart. Our heart is inclined to sin from the time that we are born. It is easy to fall into the routine of forgetting and forsaking God. But we can still choose weather or not to continue in sin.
We can either yield to sin, or ask God to help us resist, by calling upon the name of Jesus. The Bible say’s, Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ~ James 4:7
We actually have to teach our children how to obey, just like scripture teaches us an adult because the scripture is all ordained by God. Children are not birthed with a willingness to obey. They will test us and try us to see if they can get their way, to see if we as their parent will break down and give in and let them have their way. God is no different. He lets us have our way as well. We will not like the outcome of choosing our own will because it becomes messy and at times ugly. But if we persist in our own way, God will yield His power in our life and let us have our way, even though He knows what is best for our lives.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. . 2 Peter 3:9
The Lord does not delay and is not tardy or slow about what He promises, according to some people’s conception of slowness, but He is long-suffering , extraordinarily patient toward us, not desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to repentance.
Don’t overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn’t late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of us, holding back the end because He doesn’t want anyone lost.
He’s giving everyone space and time to change. But the day will come when the trumpet is blown and that means that time is up here on earth. The clock stops as we know it because in His time, there is no end, but we have our chance now to choose to yield to His will in our life and accept His plan.
Christian certainty is a different kind of certainty. It is not a certainty of the mind, because our minds remain under the influence of sin as well as our limited understanding and knowledge.
It is by the renewing of our minds, and by our faith to daily search out truth, follow that truth and apply it to our lives.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Be changed by the entire renewal of your mind, by its new ideals and its new attitude, so that you may prove for yourself what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect in His sight for you.
So here is how we can do that: Seek out Jesus. Ask Jesus to strengthen your belief in Him. Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.
Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do before Him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.
Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Always seek Him and His will and He will respond when you seek Him with all your heart. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.
Your faith will become so strong and your life will become so bright like a beacon. His light will shine through you and you will become like a city that is set upon a hill. No-one will mistake you as fire proof, because you will be set on fire by the power of His Holy Spirit. Just a warning though, there will always be someone ready with a fire extinguisher in their hands, because satan does not like the light and he will use even the people of the light to try to put out the fire of God.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid..” Matthew 5:14
Obey your own call and don’t worry about what others think. Jesus said,
“But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 10:33
Get the Light! Get on top of your own mountain and take command of it through His power. Lead by example and others will find their way.
