Jot or Tittle

Jesus said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:17-18

What is specifically written about Christ in the Law that He would fulfill?

He said Himself that He didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fill it up. Give it more meaning as it were. It was said long ago by the prophet Isaiah that Jesus would make the law more honorable.

Isaiah 42:21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

Did Christ do this? Didn’t Jesus give the law more meaning? In the very same chapter where Jesus said that He did not come to destroy the law and the prophets, He went on to teach things like, “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.” Look it up for yourself. Matthew 5:17-48

And didn’t Jesus go on to say that anyone who broke the commandments or would teach men to break them, (do away with them) that he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

What is a jot? What exactly is a tittle?

Jot and Tittle in the Greek is iota and keraia. The jot and title are similar to the dot over our i and the cross of a t. Think about that.. If the crossbar is missing, ‘halt’ becomes ‘hall’ and the non-English-speaking translator would be misled.

Iota represents the yodh, which is the smallest letter in the Hebrew Alefbet. Keraia is a hook or the tiny slant in the Hebrew Alefbet. So what Jesus was saying was that the tiniest mark or the smallest letter would not be taken away from the Law of God.

So what does one do with this statement by the Son of God? Jesus said that not one jot or one title would pass from the law as long as heaven and earth were still here, yet heaven and earth are still here. How then can the law be destroyed? Jesus said, to think not!
