The ‘Sign’ of the Covenant

Many might answer that it was a rainbow… but they would not be correct. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a rainbow and believed a lie that I was taught.  I will never look at a rainbow the same way again.

The covenant that God made with Noah was this: Genesis 8:21-2 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. {a sweet…: Heb. a savour of rest or, satisfaction} {for the imagination: or, through the imagination}  While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

But the ‘sign’ of the covenant would be: “I do set my ‘bow in the cloud’, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13 rainbow-fire

So your average rainbow is not the sign of the covenant at all, but when you see a rainbow in the cloud, then yes, that would be a sign of the covenant.

An interesting short study in the word ‘cloud’ reveals something pretty awesome.               Photograph courtesy World Picture Network

Exodus 19:16 ¶ And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

A thick cloud is translated ‘cloud of glory’

Psalm 18:11 He made darkness his secret place; His pavilion round about Him were dark waters (canopy) and thick clouds of the skies.

Leviticus 16:2 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

Leviticus 16:13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:

The word cover is the root word for sukkah, which is a temporary covering as the folks dwelt in during the Feast of Sukkoth.  So can we assume that He will not dwell in the clouds forever?  I think so.

Psalm 68:4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens (on the clouds) by his name Yah, and rejoice before him.

Psalm 97:2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

Interestingly, the word justice is the same Hebrew word used for ordinance.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, He did so in a cloud and when He returns, He will return in a cloud. I am sure it will be a very bright one, full of His glory.

During the Tribulation we read: Zep 1:15-16 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

Joel 2:2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

Since now we know that it is He that rides on the clouds and He was the protection above the mercy seat and the cloud that lead them by day and was behind them when they faced danger in the wilderness traveling‘s.  We need not worry when we know it is He that will be in the clouds during the tribulation days of darkness and gloom.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Nope, He will not dwell in the clouds forever…
