The Fivefold Witness to Yahushua

In this study, touring through the testimony of John the Beloved, we will discover Yahushua pointing to five witnesses of Who He is.

John 5:31-35 ¶ If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of Me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of Me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

If Yahushua were the only one bearing witness of the claims that He was making, His testimony would not have been accepted. He opens this portion by discounting His own self as a witness.

Yahushua said that there was another who bore witness of Him and that witness did bare truth. He readily admits that John the Baptist is a truthful witness and gives truthful testimony.  We know from other text that John the Baptist also testified that Yahushua is the Lamb of Elohim Who takes away the sin of the world.  By this claim, we can believe that John the Baptist is a faithful witness because he did not point to Himself, he pointed to Yahushua.

Yahushua is the Light and John was a lamp. John’s lamp by this time had been dimmed because he had already been incarcerated in prison. This is why Yahushua spoke of John in the past tense saying that John ‘was’ a burning and shining light and that people were willing for a season to believe him. Ergo, John the Baptist is the first of five witnesses that Yahushua is discussing in this passage.

John 5:36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given Me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father hath sent Me.

Yahushua is saying here that the second witness is even greater than the witness of John the Baptist. Why?  Yahushua is telling us that the ‘works’ that the Father gave Him to finish, to complete and accomplish are the ‘works’ that bear witness that He was sent from the Father.

The prophet Isaiah said that ¶ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. ~ Isaiah 35:5-6

And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. ~ Isaiah 29:18

Isaiah 32:3 And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.

Isaiah 42:7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Isaiah prophesied that the eyes of the blind would be opened and the ears that could not hear would be opened. He said that those who saw and those who heard would harken, they would pick up their ears, attend to and mark well in regard to what they saw and heard. He also said that those who sat in darkness would be set free from their captivity.

John the Baptist didn’t perform any signs that Isaiah had prophesied. These specific works were however performed by Yahushua giving manifested revelation to the testimony of the prophet.

Matthew shares with us in his testimony that Yahushua did perform these miracles. [Matthew 9:33-35]  Matthew stated that a dumb man was brought to Yahushua that was possessed with a devil and that once the devil was cast out that the man who once could not speak began to speak and that the multitudes who witnessed this miracle, marveled.  It was the Pharisees that said that Yahushua only performed this miracle because He had cast out the devil through the prince of devils. This kind of thing had never been seen in Israel according to Matthew. Their accusations didn’t bother Yahushua.  He just kept right on going to the cities and the villages teaching in their synagogues preaching the gospel of the kingdom of Elohim, healing every sickness and every disease among the people. There are other similar testimonies among the writings of Mark and Luke.  So the ‘works’ that Yahushua did are the second to witness that Yahushua was Who He claimed to be.

John 5:37-39 And the Father Himself, which hath sent Me, hath borne witness of Me. Ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His shape. And ye have not His word abiding in you: for Whom He hath sent, Him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

This is pretty condemning  evidence isn’t it?  Yahushua is saying that His audience had not heard the voice of Yahwey or seen His shape. They hadn’t heard His sound or seen His appearance nor did they have His word abiding in them and this is why they didn’t believe Him.

The Father Who sent Yahushua had testified on His behalf but these Judeans couldn’t believe Him because they had not kept the word of Yahwey in their hearts. A person with love for Yahwey would receive Yahushua Who preached the same as is written in Torah and the Tanakh as a whole.

We know that Yahushua is not referring to the voice that was heard at His baptism because He invited them to search the scriptures. They might have professed to have searched the scriptures but for some reason they did not see Yahushua as the Messiah and they certainly didn’t believe Him now.  They had completely missed the prophesies of Who He was, right there in front of them. What is even more convictive is that due to their hardened hearts they couldn’t receive Yahushua because the main element of Yahwey’s witness was not in them; His word that was written in the ‘scriptures’.

I am reminded of what Moses said: The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto Him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. Deuteronomy 18:15-16

The people then were afraid to hear the voice of Yahwey at the base of Mt Sanai. Moses said that when the prophet {Yahushua} would come, ‘like unto him’ that the people shall harken [shama: diligently, discern, give ear, obey, publish proclaim].

Even though this same prophet would come Moses said that Yahwey would put in His mouth all that Yahwey had commanded.

{Deuteronomy 18 19-22} Moses went on to say that whoever did not harken, [shama: diligently, discern, give ear, obey, publish proclaim] the words of Yahwey that He would put in this prophet’s mouth Who would speak in Yahwey’s name that He commanded Him to speak;  that Yahwey would require [darash diligently, inquire, make inquisition]  of him.

In other words, those who did not diligently, discern, give ear, obey, publish and proclaim; Hear that prophet; that is believe and obey him would be sought out and questioned.

Luke later on reiterated the same: And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Moses also said in this same passage that if the words of that prophet [Who would come speaking in the name of Yahwey], did come to pass that the people should not be afraid of Him. (VS 22)

I find it interesting that the people way back then said, “Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.”  They didn’t want to hear His voice again. Is this possibly why not many hear the voice of truth that Yahushua spoke?

Nonetheless, Yahushua shares with His audience then and His audience now who read this text in John chapter 5, that the Father is the third witness of Who Yahushua is in verses 37 and 38.

Were it not for Yahushua telling His audience to ‘search the scriptures’ the fourth witness might have been overlooked. Isaiah specifically spoke to the scriptures as giving evidence.

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. ~ Isaiah 8:20

If Yahushua had not spoken to the law and the testimony thereof, no light would have been seen in Him.

Yahwey spoke through the mouth of the prophet Isaiah saying, “Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.   And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it unto them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein. ~ Isaiah 34:16-17

It is the breath of the word of Yahwey given by the Ruach that gathers those who will read and not fail. They will be gathered in sacred assembly. They will not be affected by the prophecy spoken by Isaiah in verse 1-15 regarding the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion. The fourth are a witness conclusion of all the prophecies spoken of Yahushua that are written in Tanakh.

John 5:40-44 And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in My Father’s name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

The love that Yahushua speaks of here is not the love of Yahwey but the love ‘for’ Yahwey. He spoke to His audience that day and He is still speaking to His audience the very same words. If we do not have love for Yahwey, we are seeking the honor from men and each other rather than the love of Yahwey. Yahushua wasn’t looking for their respect. They refused to come to Him because they preferred to honor themselves who came in their own name, not in the name of Yahwey. They respected themselves and their own word.  That is why they had made the claim that when He did heal the people of their blindness and their lack of hearing that He must have done so by the prince of devils.  They sure couldn’t heal themselves or anyone else for that matter because they were the blind, leading the blind. They couldn’t speak the word of truth because the love of Yahwey was not in them nor was His word apparent upon their lips.

Yahushua did come in the name of Yahwey, thereby showing His love of the Father both with-in and spoken through Him.  The people rejected Yahushua because they had rejected the love of Yahwey. They still did not want to hear His voice. They did not seek to honor that which only comes from the mouth of Yahwey.

Yahushua saves for the last of His argument His fifth and final witness.

John 5:45-47 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed Me: for he wrote of Me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe My words?

Yahushua says that He will not accuse them to the Father because they have already been accused by Moses, in whom they trust.  However, He does not say that they had Moses. In fact He says that they do not have Moses. The implication of Yahushua’s statement and question is profound.  These ‘religious leaders’ did not believe Moses to begin with.  They didn’t follow what Moses had said.  Instead they had violated Torah, adding to and taking away from it.  The end result was ‘un-belief’ in the greatest prophet of the Torah – The Messiah.

By following their own way and their own man-made traditions, they had substituted their thinking and practices for what Moses had written; they found themselves locked out of the goal of Torah.

The word trust here isn’t trust by the way that one might think. The Pharisees obviously did not place their trust in what Moses taught otherwise they would have recognized Yahushua as the Messiah and they would not have rejected Him and His words would have been familiar to them. The word trust here is elpizo to expect or confide:–(have, thing) hope(-d) (for), trust. Yahushua wouldn’t have to accuse them before the Father on the Day of Judgment because the one in whom they placed their expectation and hope will – Moses.

Moses wrote about Yahushua who would become Messiah through the institutions of Torah, the promises to the Patriarchs, his own prophecies of the prophet who would be like him and in the history of the deliverance from Egyptian slavery. Over three hundred prophecies alone were fulfilled when Yahushua came to earth through the womb of Mary, yet the Pharisees who claimed to teach them; didn’t recognize the very One Who stood in front of them on the day that He brought fourth His five witnesses that testified of Who He is.

As the fifth and final witness, Yahushua’s question about believing what Moses has written and linking His words to believing in Him are words that are still just as applicable to the believer today. While virtually all believers today confess Jesus as their LORD and Messiah, it is a much smaller group who also believe what Moshe wrote about Yahushua HaMashiach.

Yahushua stated that one cannot believe and understand His words and teaching without first believing in the words of the fifth and final witness. Based on this principled requirement for proper belief and the foundation that Yahwey provided to Moses, how could anyone defer to the word of man over the word that Yahwey gave to Moses and then to Yahushua Who would speak what Yahwey commanded and put into His mouth?

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed Me: for he wrote of Me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe My words?

Let us follow the instructions of Yahwey in the example of His only begotten Son Who followed in the path of the Kingdom of Elohim and His righteousness.
