Letter to Ephesus – Chapter One

Paul’s Letter To Ephesus

Book of Ephesians, Chapter One : 1-2 ¶ Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

 Through the will of Yahwey, Paul was chosen by Yahushua to be an emissary to the messianic community at Ephesus. This letter was addressed to the saint’s (Hagios, physically pure and morally blameless) AND to the faithful (Pistos, trustworthy, trustful, believing, sure and true) in Messiah. Paul bestows a blessing of favor and Shalom. Twice now, Paul has already separated Yahwey from Yahushua in the opening of this letter by saying he is an apostle of Yahushua by the will of Yahwey and that he is sending a blessing from ‘God our Father’ AND from ‘the Lord Jesus Christ’. I can accept that Paul was chosen by Yahushua because Paul was an earthling when Yahushua found him on the road to Damascus. Yahushua chose Paul by the will of Yahushua. Yahushua was sent from the Father to do the will of the Father. I am not quite sure why Paul would make the distinction of the blessing to be from both if : ‘I and my Father are One’. {John 10:30}

 3-14 ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; Wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will: That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.

Paul goes on to say a blessing, a benediction [ b’rakhah] of sorts such as the Amidah that is recited three times a day, similar to the recital of Sh’ma ; the words of praise from Adonai to the people of Israel of whom Yahwey loves, spoken over them by the High Priest.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

 The LORD make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

 The LORD lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

 And they shall put My name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

~  Numbers 6:24-27

Paul’s use of expressing himself is also remindful of the close of Ahavah, the benediction closing just before the Sh’ma. In all His wisdom, Yahwey has made known to us His favor towards humanity with knowledge and understanding . He favors us by sharing Himself with us and knowledge that was not known before in other generations. This tells us that the Gracious Giver of knowledge is bestowing certain favor upon this latter generation a much different favor than He showed to those who have gone before us. Something that He did not share with them, through Paul… He is now revealing something not seen before.

Paul reveals to the folks at Ephesus the mystery, something that Yahwey previously concealed but now revealed. However, there were hints hint of this mystery, however I will only share just a few in the book of Job and the Psalms.

Job 33:24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

Psalms 49:8-9 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

(49:15-16) But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. {Selah: “Stop and think about what I have said and what I am about to say”} Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

Yahwey purposed in Himself that we would know the mystery. He made it known that we needed redemption through the blood to be forgiven of sin. This was made known to us from the beginning when an animal was killed and Yahwey used the skin of an animal, to clothe Adam and Eve after they disobeyed the commandment not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Blood had been shed when Yahwey sacrificed an animal’s life so that He could make a covering for their bodies, thereby covering their shame. Before they disobeyed His commandment, they were naked before Him and did not know they were ashamed.

Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3:21 ¶ Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

So, having said all of that, we know that the mystery is not the fact that man needs redemptive covering through the blood of animals. Paul reveals to the folks at Ephesus the mystery, something that Yahwey previously concealed but now revealed.

As we learn from the scripture reference in Job and the passage in Psalms, money could never redeem or pay the purchase price to redeem anyone from eternal death. Yahwey had to conceive a plan whereby man could not redeem himself either. God knew that He must be the One to redeem man from the power of the grave and set him free from the punishment of the law that held him bound to death, thereby setting man free from the law of sin and death; the punishment for certain sin. The wages of sin are death but Yahwey had to find a way to make that ransom effective enough for a full pardon. He found it through the man whom He would deliver unto the pit and then lift Him out by lifting the Spirit , redeeming man back unto Himself. One man would pay that price by sacrificing His own blood, thereby laying Himself down so that man could be forgiven of sin, without having to stay in the grave, thereby the corruption of His body would never be known once He was risen from the grave. Yahwey had certainly found a ransom.

We now know that Yahushua’s blood was poured out upon the altar of the cross freeing up the penalty and punishment of death for transgression of the law. Now folks could love Him by keeping His commandments and not throwing them around as if they meant nothing or trampling upon His good favor and mercy. Folks would not be barely free or escape certain death by skating on thin ice either. They would be fully free to follow His commandments without being fearful of death. Instead they were completely and abundantly free because Yahwey had thought of everything that would satisfy His own written punishment for death… to those whom He would call into service and worship, thereby bringing glory and honor to His name. He took delight in this in knowing that He had sealed the redemptive process when He would open up this plan for everyone, Jew and Gentile, not showing any favor towards one or the other, nor those who had died previous to the crucifixion nor those who would come after. Now all mankind could be sanctified through the offering of the body of Yahushua HaMashiach…. once for all.

 Yahwey set it all out before us through Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth. In Him, we find out who we are and what we are living for. This was the plan conceived by Yahwey who had designs long ago that humankind would live a glorious life under His instructive law. His foreordained purpose was that this message of hope would be signed, sealed and delivered by the Holy Spirit. The death of Yahushua was the instalment of a promise of something better that is coming, a reminder that those who worship Him, showing their love of Him by keeping His commandments would receive a full inheritance of this promise. Blessed are they that ‘do’ His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. All things in heaven and earth will soon be gathered unto Yahwey, through Yahushua Whom we have obtained an inheritance, all to the glory of Yahwey.

Yahwey is building a family through Yahushua. When Yahushua said, I and My Father are One, He was sharing a truth that one day, we would all be one, as He and His Father are One. Yahushua prayed in the garden that folks would be sanctified through Yahwey’s truth and said that His word is truth. [John 17:17] He also prayed that they {we} all may be one; as thou, Father {Yahwey}, art in Me {Yahushua}, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent Me.

Now to finish this first chapter of this letter to the folks at Ephesus.

15-23 ¶ Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, Which He wrought in Christ, when He raised him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.

Paul wrote that once he had heard of the outpouring of love that these folks at Ephesus had for one another, and the trust that they had in Yahushua., he couldn’t stop thanking Yahwey for them. He said in his letter that every time he prayed for these folks, he would also thank Yah for them. He also prayed that they would be enlightened and that they would be able to discern in their hearts to know Yahwey better so that their eyes would stay fixed and clear on the plan that Yahwey had called them too. He prayed that they would grasp the immense purpose of the glorious way of life that they had been called unto and that they would be strengthened with boundless energy to fulfil this purpose. This reminds me of the very same energy with which Yahushua had fulfilled His duty in keeping the commandments of Yahwey, thereby not destroying the law, or the prophets, which is the duty of all man; fearing Yahwey and keeping His commandments. [Ecclesiastes 12:13]

All of their energy for these folks at Ephesus would come from Yahushua; Whom Yahwey raised from the grave and set Him on a throne to keep charge of the universe, nothing being exempt from His rule. Yahushua thereby fills everything with His presence, and it is in this presence that they would walk in the strength of Yahushua, by the power of the Holy Spirit. As it is written in verse 17, it would be God the Father who would give the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. It is Paul’s view that in Yahushua, bodily, lives the fullness of Elohim of all that Yahwey is. It is through the corporate body of Messiah, that the fullness [Pleroma] of Yahwey fills all creation. We show our faithfulness to Yahwey by trusting in what His Son has done. It pleased Yahwey to have His pleroma (fullness) live in His Son.

We do not want to miss out on the fact that there is warfare being played out. The principality, and power that are being placed under the feet of Yahushua where the enemies of Yahwey will become nothing more than a footstool is showing us that there is indeed an imagery of spiritual warfare going on. The mention of the right hand is a development of power. This imagery will be touched on by other scriptures in this letter, such as chapter 3:9-10, 4:26-27 but mostly developed in chapter 6 verse 10-18. Nevertheless, Yahushua is given the power as the head of the whole Israelite Messianic community, the family of the God of Israel.

Prayer: Father of lights from Whom all blessings flow, we thank You for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the full knowledge of Who You are in us. We thank You for the purpose and plan that You have called us to fulfil. We thank You that we are chosen in You. We thank You for Your Son, Whom You sent to represent You on this earth. We thank You that from the very beginning, You marked us with Your love to be Your children according to how it pleased You and Your good will. We thank You for the opportunity to love all humankind through the same love that Your Son showed us, through the writings of this letter of the Apostle Paul, our brother. We thank You that Your Son wields all the power over us, strengthening us through the Holy Spirit, helping each one of us to continue walking in Your truth, Your word that sanctifies us so that we are more than capable to show our love to You, by keeping Your commandments and no longer feeling the burden that we should die, should we mess up. We thank You that You Father, have made a covering for our sin and that we should not taste death nor feel its sting. Thank You for the everlasting promise of eternal life, kept in heaven for us. In Jesus name of Yahushua, we pray. ~ Amen

  2. You say “I am not quite sure why Paul would make the distinction of the blessing to be from both if : ‘I and my Father are One’. {John 10:30}” Very simple both are tow different persons (if we may use that word, because only one is a person: Jeshua. The Other is an eternal Spirit). Jesus is the son of God not a god son like many want to place him and worship him. For Paul it was very clear that Jeshua was the son of God and not God. They being one like we should being one with Christ and with God does not make Jesus nor us being God. That means being one of mind or being of the same spirit, not being one and the same person.
