I am not so sure that I have ever read scripture where ‘the Jews’ tried to follow the law ‘as a means for overcoming sin’, but it appears that this is what was occurring during the time in which Yahushua walked the streets of Jerusalem.
They were commanded to follow the law if they wanted to receive the blessings of Abraham which they could not because they did not follow Torah. The result is as was promised and the curses followed them. They could abide by Torah for short bits of time, for instance, as in the days of Joshua.
Joshua 24:29-31 ¶ And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash. And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
I am not positive but it is probable maybe during the reign of Josiah and there may be other bits of time.
The Jews nor the Gentiles can overcome sin without the help of the Holy Spirit. But it is entirely possible to overcome the spirit of evil, that which is in opposition to Yah and His ways, if we are His children.
1st John 4:4 ¶ Ye are of Elohim, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Romans 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Jesus didn’t even claim to be as good as His Father. Let’s listen in on a conversation between Jesus and a certain man in the passage of Mark 10: 17-19
And when He was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to Him, and asked Him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
And Yahushua said unto him, Why callest thou Me good? there is none good but one, that is, Elohim.
Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
Yahushua did not tell this person all he needed to do was believe in Him. Instead He repeated a few of the Ten Commandments. Just because Yahushua did not recite the whole of the Torah, along with the 613 commandments, certainly did not imply that these were the only ones that He felt were important. Feeding the hungry and helping the poor and taking care of the widow; are part of the law of Elohim, but not part of the Ten Commandments.
Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because Elohim had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased Elohim.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to Elohim must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
Yahushua taught that it is by faith…. we have to have faith in what He says is true and we must believe in Him ‘and’ keep covenant with Him by keeping in our hearts, what He taught us through the scriptures. We cannot and never will be able to overcome sin on our own. For the law of the Spirit of life in Yahushua HaMashiac hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, Elohim sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The law (teachings) that Yahwey gave to Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So He did what the law could not do. He sent His own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body Yahwey declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the same law, but now with the assistance of the Spirit that lives with-in.
We, as His followers all know what is expected: we are to treat each other like brothers and sisters in Christ even when we disagree. We are not to judge each other by which church we serve in. Having unity in the basic tenet of truth which is Yahushua came in the form of man, enduring our hardships and plight as humans, He died for the sin of all mankind providing the ransom for our debt. He rose again on the third day and now sits at the right hand of the throne of The God of Israel, interceding on our behalf because He listens and answers our prayers. Nor are we to judge those who do not follow the writings of the Bible. If they do not know, how could they follow?
There can be no unity between those who accept the full authority of the Bible and those who treat the Bible as a fable. Nor can there be unity between those who believe Yahushua died and arose and those who deny His death and resurrection. These are two polar opposite views and beliefs and they are not unified in the same. There are however and can be genuine friend ships and relationships between the two opposite and opposing beliefs. We are all here to love and share the same atmosphere.
Yahushua prayed for unity. He knows that because of sin true believers so quickly and so easily break their unity. So He prays that Yahwey will keep or protect us in the unity that we have. Our unity needs protection our unity needs protecting. The unity of believers needs the guiding and providential hand of The God of creation in order to be preserved. He also needs to protect our unity from Satan and the forces of evil but we too are to pray that we be delivered from the evil one. Satan loves to see the body of believers have disunity. He loves to see fights and splits and schisms. He loves to see heresies and arguments drive believers apart.
Yahwey also needs to protect our unity from our own sin and He does this through His Son, Yahushua. Let there be no doubt about it – disunity is always caused by sin. And, I must add, there is always plenty of sin and blame to go around; so much, in fact, that neither side is ever blameless in any church fight. In humility we need to recognize this. It actually sickens me to have to admit that there are such things even going on with-in the body of Christ. Ergo, because of sin and evil and Satan; our unity needs protecting.
The unity between believers is comparable to the unity that exists between the Father and the Son. I have never even once read of a debate between Yahushua and Yahwey as to how they need to do things their own way. They are in complete and total agreement because they are ‘one’ [Echad] in the same. We should be following this same choice of path.
