Sabbath Day VS First Day of the Week

First of all, I want to point something out to those who do not understand why folks are leaving the organized first day keeping church. Some folks in the church whisper that it is because they are being influenced by a Hebrew Roots Movement. What they are not aware of is that this has been prophesied that Sabbath is to be restored in the last days. Once a heart recognizes Sabbath, all the rest of honoring and observing His Holy Days seems to fall into place because they all point to God’s perfect plan.

Isaiah 58:12-14 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

One must never forget that Yahushua said, He did not come to destroy the law or the prophets. In fact, He came to bring complete understanding to the Torah (Law in Hebrew) and to show how the instructions are to be acted upon. Most of His commands are reiterations or expansions of God’s original instructions. So when He said He did not come to destroy the law or the prophets, He did not come to destroy what the prophets said either.

God states that the upheaval, tragedy, problems, and woes of earth come because people refuse to follow His law, and have even tried to change it (Isaiah 24:4-6). Stop right here and grab your Bible and read that.

Today, the earth is the stage, the theater of the universe, where the tragic results of disobeying God’s eternal law is certainly being revealed. It becomes very obvious that the reason we are seeing a decline in all the earth is because the love of many is waxing cold. The earth is defiled because of the transgression of His eternal law, because they (Those in power) changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. It would not surprise me in the least if the downfall began with the feet of His children turning away from His Sabbath.

Somewhere in history, the Sabbath has came to be recognized by the Christians as the first day of the week even though we do not read of any certain change in the whole of the Bible. In fact we see quite the opposite. But just exactly how important is the Sabbath to God?

One of the reasons God sent the children of Israel into the Babylonian captivity and destroyed Jerusalem was for breaking the Sabbath. Two of the prophets, Nehemiah and Jeremiah both wrote of this:

Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath. ~ Nehemiah 13:18

But if ye will not hearken unto Me to hallow the Sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched. ~ Jeremiah 17:27.

So if it was important enough for people to be punished because they did not observe Sabbath, do you think He has changed His mind just because of Jesus? If Jesus had not observed the Sabbath, I might come to that conclusion but He didn’t. Even years and years after the crucifixion, the writers of the New Testament still observed the Sabbath. In fact, the Sabbath is mentioned eleven times after the crucifixion while Sunday is mentioned only twice in Hebraic terms. What I mean by that is to someone who speaks Hebrew, they would only refer to Sunday as ‘first day’, just like the Bible does. They were Hebrew writers were they not?

Are you aware that even the Gentiles receive a special blessing when they are obedient to God’s fourth commandment?

Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants, every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of My covenant; Even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

~ Isaiah 56:6, 7

In fact, Yahwey promises to bless everyone who keeps His Sabbath day holy.

Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. ~ Isaiah 56:2

So often many people including myself read the scriptures so often that they gloss over scriptures and miss an important point. Here is one for example. This is Jesus talking:

How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days. ~ Matthew 12:12

So think about that. He is saying that it is not only lawful to do well on the Sabbath, He is saying that the Sabbath is according to the law. To do the opposite would represent lawlessness. Lawlessness is one who lives without obedience to the law. Lawlessness is what occurs when love waxes cold.

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. ~ Matthew 24:12

Jesus taught that because of lawlessness, love will grow cold. Lawlessness is a condition of being without law. When He and His commandments are violated, we are not showing Him that we love Him. If we choose rather to ignore His Instructions written in His law, we are not showing Him love, yet His law teaches us how to love Him and how to love others and respect their blessings.

Jesus told the people that the way to life is not going to be popular, that in fact, it is a narrow path that leads His people and few there be that find it. Christianity is widely popular, but the path that I travel on is not a road that I find to be a well traveled path. This path calls for discernment and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. There is no other way to learn His righteousness and we must trust that He knows the way. He is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. Most folks do not even want to hear or talk about the law because they have been taught all their lives that the law has been replaced by love and grace. This is so far from the truth and in my opinion; this kind of thinking belittles His love and grace. I can just see the devil laughing at folks who sincerely believe it because he is happy that he has them so convinced. To do away with the Sabbath has been one of his main goals because it is the very first commandment after the first three that have to do with loving God and honoring Him.

The first three commandments have to do with a direct relationship with Him as our God. Then comes the fourth commandment which begins a list of the last seven which has to do with us and the folks we live with and how we manage our relationship with them. So you see, if we love Him and honor Him by keeping His commandments (The first three), then because of our love for Him, we keep and honor all ten utterances that came from His own mouth. Don’t forget, ‘man shall not live by ‘bread’ alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’. Hmmm, that is a lot to take in isn’t it? If one cannot be obedient to the very first of His commands that relate to remembering and keeping a certain day holy, one’s professed love for Him flies right out the window doesn’t it?

Here is another scripture that one might take a better look at:

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. ~ Acts 13:42

Even the Gentiles were gathering and attending the synagogue’s on the Sabbath day after they had been converted. Why shouldn’t they? They were told too by the folks who gathered at the council when they made the decision that Gentile men would not have to be circumcised. Don’t believe me, look it up for yourself. In Acts, verses 6-20, the elders came together and made their decisions on what to do with the Gentile converts. Verse 21 ended the conversation by their writing in the letter that was sent out, that the Gentiles were to be being told to attend Sabbath so they could learn more about what Moses had written down and what he had taught.

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.

If James, Peter and Paul were trying to promote first day keeping rather than Sabbath, they could have said, “Stay away from the synagogues that are teaching that it is lawful to keep the Sabbath and all that Moses taught”. But they didn’t. The idea here is that the Gentiles would be encouraged to attend Sabbath gatherings at the synagogues every Sabbath so that they could hear the scrolls from the Torah being read so that the Gentiles could learn the law so they would know what their duty was.
