No Peace, But A Sword

Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

“I came, not to send peace, but a sword.”

Yahushua came to bring people into all truth. His truth is a sword that divides and separates His chosen and His called from all the rest of the people in this world. (SHEEP FROM GOATS)

Reference verse: John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Reality tells me that if truth makes you free, then truth must be a source of healing.

Matthew 10:35 -36 For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.

By itself, this sentence is puzzling. It sounds as if Yahushua is saying that He came to separate families.

We know from the Old Testament, that The God of Creation specifically Did called Abram ‘away’ from his family, so what Yahushua is saying must align with the Fathers will.

Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”

The reason that Elohim gives to Abram for calling him away from his family is so that Elohim can bless ‘all’ the families of the entire earth through Abraham’s name. He would make Abram into a great nation, bless him, and make his name so great, that he (Abram) will exemplify divine blessing.

But we must not miss that the call of Abram contained both a command and a promise for His obedience.

But what about Yahushua? He has said enough times that He came to speak what the Father gave Him to speak. I think that we can safely assume that He is telling the truth, but why is He saying that He came to divide families?

Yahushua also said, “I came, not to send peace, but a sword.”

But we also know that Yahushua came to bring people into all truth. His truth is a sword that divides and separates His chosen and the called, from all the rest of the people in this world.

Matthew 10:37 He that loves his father or mother ‘MORE THAN ME’ is not worthy of Me: and he that loves his son or daughter MORE THAN ME is not worthy of Me.

Lukes account seems a bit more harsh but the result is the same:

Luke 14:26 If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and HIS OWN LIFE ALSO, he cannot be My disciple. When we stop and take the time to think about what Yahushua is commanding His audience, and us, the reader; we realize that the possibility of loss is actually compared against the value of what we stand to gain. There is a small cost by observing this commandmemt {mitzvah} with a great and eternal benefit obtained by fulfilling it. Likewise, we aught to consider the eternal cost for transgressing His commandment.

It isn’t that Yahushua is wanting to alienate us from our families but He is showing us that there is a cost of following Him and after all, we ‘are’ called to count the cost.

Luke 14: 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple.

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

It isn’t that we are not to love anyone, nor are we called to hate others. It is just that we are to love Him ‘more’ and others less, than Him. The truth of what He is saying is that He wants our love for Him to take precedence.

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Yahushua expects true affection. He selfishly gave His life so that we could be forgiven of our transgression. Therefore, He should not have to compete for our love.

Our service and obedience to Him proves our love. We know that He wants it This way because He said,

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

If you love Me, show Me, by doing this….

He wants to be loved by all and above all. He wants His love to be returned by our action of showing Him that we love Him above all else, even life itself.

The love that Yahushua gives to us, we give to others because we are overflowing with His love. Loving our family and friends and loving each other, even those who are our enemies is sharing His love. If we want to be worthy of Him, this is what we will do. Without our relationship with Him, our relationship with others would not be wrapped in truth.

Everything we think say and do is in the light of our love for Him. Make no mistake about it, there are certainly going to be divisions in the family unit because not everyone is willing to accept that He comes first.

Our will is bent toward loving Him and serving Him before we serve the needs of others. And then, we are to serve others before we serve ourselves. It is because of our love for Him that we are able to serve others and to love them.

It’s like choosing our best Lamb to be sacrificed because the reward of our obedience, outweighs the loss of our best lamb.

Albert Barnes wrote that “Christ must be loved supremely, or He’s not loved it all.

If we are not willing to give up all earthly possessions, and forsake all earthly friends, and if we do not obey Him rather than all others, we have no true attachment to Him.”

Our actions of love for Him comes before all others. My love toward Him is motivated by the purity of His reward towards me – eternal life. He will never love me any less nor will He love me any more.

Yahushua is to be more dear to us than our own children, no matter how young or old that child is.

It was He who died to set me free, yet even if I go completely out of His will, He will still love me when others do not.

On a personal level, I have spoken to many families who are suffering from family disintegration. These are personal tribulations. Yet in the midst of this breakdown I have learned that we are all striving for healing in these relationships, even though Yahushua said that is not why He came.

Romans 5:3- 4 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

So tribulations are a blessing in disguise because when patience is examined it comes with a promise of hope. This is why Paul says to glory in tribulation knowing that it will work patience.

The conclusion is this: “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of יהוה is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.” ~ Romans 5:5

Hope is what reminds me that I need not be ashamed because patience trickles down too hope and my hope begins because of the love of my Father who has shed His Spirit with-in me.

It is through faith and patience that we gain our promises, however it is ‘after we have done the will of Elohim that we receive the promise of our hope.

HEBREW 10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

This is why we need patience to run the race. Without patience we can easily be upset by the tactics of sin which trips us up every time. We NEED to learn ‘endurance in order to fulfil His will in us, so that we can finish the race and receive the gift of our calling.

There is no compromise. We must follow Him all the way, even if we have to learn this path of truth over and over since it appears obvious that we learn endurance through consistency.

He is deliberately teaching us this consistency because He has a purpose that we learn patience, but that we also learn both loyalty and faith towards Him in all of our persecutions, tribulations and trials.

Because one day, there is a coming a clear decisive division when He will separate us one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

We have no guarantee that we will ever see a healing in the family unit, but we do know that our consistancy to remain faithful to Him will have a great impact on their hearts.

Reality tells me that this is why there is a division in the first place because what they see in us is something that disturbs their perceived safety in the way of man, rather than the way of God through obedience.

He is teaching us, making us stronger both in our hearts and our minds to prepare us so that we make the same choice to always choose Him above all else.

Just like Abram, we have a destiny and a promise. But the way I see it is, that there are two mistakes that one can make along the road to truth…. Not believing in the Son of Elohim and not following Him all the way.

Him first, Him most and Him without end.
